The process of return

1. Getting information on IOM Assisted Voluntary Returns

A candidate for an assisted voluntary return, a social worker or a representative acting on behalf of a candidate will receive information on Assisted Voluntary Return and Reintegration Programme by calling the anonymous low-rate helpline of the AVRR Programme 0850 211 262, or personally at the IOM office in Bratislava or in Košice, or via e-mail sent to returnhome@iom.int.

IOM officers will provide information on the Assisted Voluntary Return and Reintegration Programme and arrange a meeting with candidate for assisted voluntary return in the IOM Office in Bratislava or in Kosice.

2. Register into the Programme

A candidate will fill in a registration form within his/her personal visit at the IOM office or individually (see example of a completed registration form) whenever possible. The completed and signed form can be delivered personally or mailed by post to the IOM address:

The registration form can be downloaded from here in the following languages (as bilingual with Slovak): Arabic, Armenian, Chinese, French, Georgian, Hindu, Macedonian, Moldavian, Russian, Serbian, Spanish, Turkish and Vietnamese and Slovak.

An IOM officer will process his/her application, get in touch with a candidate by phone and having valid travel documents of the candidate, IOM will start with the preparation of his/her return.

If a candidate is currently located in an asylum facility or a detention centre of the Ministry of the Interior of the Slovak Republic, he/she can contact a social worker about decision to return home and ask him/her for help with the registration to the Assisted Voluntary Return and Reintegration Programme. IOM officer will attend the meeting with interested parties in voluntary return and will assist candidate(s) with registration to the AVRR Programme.

3. Travel documents

To leave Slovakia an applicant need valid travel documents. If does not have a passport, he/she can ask the IOM for an assistance with arranging a substitute travel documents. IOM provide applicant with form of his/her country’s embassy to apply for substitute travel documents. Apart from a completed form, an applicant is requested to provide 4 passport size photographs and a copy of an identification document, such as an identify card, a birth certificate, a copy of an applicant passport or other types of documents. How long it will take to issue a travel document, fully depends on the embassy of an applicant´s country of origin.

4. Travel arrangements

IOM will implement the necessary administrative procedures, organise means and date of an applicant´s return and book his/her flight tickets that will receive at the airport. If an applicant has his/her travel documents, return to his/her country of origin may be carried out within two weeks’ time.

5. Return to a home country

On the day of an applicant´s departure, an IOM officer will meet and accompany he/she at the airport in Slovakia and if necessary, also in transit countries and on arrival in a returnee´s country.
