About the AVRR Programme

The Assisted Voluntary Return and Reintegration Programme (AVRR) is one of many migration management tools which IOM International Organization for Migration (IOM) offers to migrants and governments. It focuses on coordinated, humane and cost effective returns and reintegration of migrants who cannot or do not want to stay in host countries and who wish to return to their country of origin voluntarily.

The AVRR programmes represent one of the tools for managing migration in the world. AVRR together with the humanitarian aid is a key element in solving the problem of illegal migration in transit and host countries. IOM offers technical support to governments in managing the returns and facilitating the migration dialogue among the countries of origin, transit and host countries.

Many of the AVRR programmes carried out by IOM were launched 30 years ago and offered migrants a basic support in preparation and realisation of their return. The AVRR Programme in Slovakia began in 1998 based on the Agreement on cooperation between International Organization for Migration and the Ministry of Interior of the Slovak Republic on assistance with return of unsuccessful asylum seekers and illegal migrants to country of origin. Gradually the AVRR Programme has developed into a comprehensive programme that offers a wide spectrum of services. Since 2008 the integral component of AVRR Programme has became the reintegration assistance in the country of origin. The AVRR Programme offers following services:

  • providing the information and counselling to potential returnees,
  • medical assistance with health problems,
  • post-return assistance in the country of origin,
  • services focused on reintegration assistance to migrants after their return to the country of origin.

IOM in Slovakia, within the framework of the AVRR Programme, provides assistance to asylum seekers, unsuccessful asylum seekers and illegal migrants before their return, during their return and after their return to their country of origin.
